Une forte odeur et une teinte jaunâtre ? Comment évaluer la qualité d'un ruban BOPP à partir de son aspect et de son odeur

In buying shipping tape for businesses many people only look at the cost. How thick it is. They miss out on two of the important signs of quality: the smell and how it looks.

Have you ever opened a package of sealing tape. Been hit by a strong bad chemical smell?. Ordered clear tape and got a cloudy yellow roll instead? This isn’t a looks issue. It often shows that the glue has broken down there are many leftover chemicals and the tape is getting old. All of these can cause problems, with how well the tape works.

This guide explains how to check the quality of BOPP sealing tape. It uses a four-step process that looks and smells for problems. It helps you avoid mistakes when buying.

Why Does Low-Quality BOPP Tape Have a Pungent Odor?

The odor of adhesive tape stems primarily from its adhesive formulation and residual manufacturing solvents:

• Water-Based Acrylic Adhesive: Premium water-based acrylic adhesives—such as those used across the Krytape product line—use water as their dispersion medium. They are environmentally friendly, non-toxic, and virtually odorless, exhibiting at most a very faint resin scent.
• Solvent-Based and Low-Grade Adhesives: Some companies try to save money by using quality adhesives that are based on solvents. When chemicals like toluene or xylene do not completely disappear during the making process they leave a chemical smell.
• Safety and Storage Risks: Tapes that have a lot of leftover solvents can be dangerous, for the people working in the warehouse. These tapes also break down quickly when stored in places, which makes them lose their ability to stick properly.

Yellowing and Cloudiness: Uncovering the Truth Behind BOPP Tape Appearance

When evaluating BOPP tape, transparency and color purity are the main tests of quality:

• Poor-Quality Tape: The clear ruban BOPP shows a yellow tint a dull look or a cloudy feel. The adhesive layer has air bubbles, streaks or small dirty spots. The paper core is thin easy to bend and rough inside. The edges of the roll are uneven with glue leaking or sticky to the touch.
• High-Quality Krytape Sealing Tape: The clear ruban BOPP looks crystal‑clear, like pure white or transparent. The adhesive coating is smooth and even without bubbles or foreign matter. The paper core is strong and rigid with clean cut edges. The roll faces are neatly slit, with no glue residue.

Why Does Inferior Tape Turn Yellow?

• Impure Raw Materials: The tape uses BOPP film blended with recycled plastics or low-grade industrial resins.
• Lack of Antioxidants: The adhesive lacks sufficient anti-aging and UV-resistant additives, causing it to oxidize and yellow rapidly under sun exposure or elevated temperatures.

A Practical 4-Step On-Site Quality Test

Without laboratory equipment procurement managers can quickly inspect BOPP tape on-site using four simple steps:

1. Smell Test: Open the carton or pull a length of tape and smell it at close range. High-quality tape should be odorless or mildly scented whereas a harsh solvent odor indicates a product.
2. Visual Inspection: Unroll a section of tape. Hold it against a light source to check if the adhesive layer is smooth and transparent, without dark specks or bubbles.
3. Touch & Tack Test:  Lightly touch the surface with your finger to gauge initial tack. Premium tape offers immediate adhesion without leaving sticky residue on your skin.
4. Tensile Test: Pull a length of tape firmly and rapidly to test its tensile strength. Grade BOPP film exhibits strong toughness and tear resistance, whereas low-quality film snaps easily and lacks elongation.

Summary & Procurement Recommendations

For packaging users and export buyers choosing high-quality BOPP tape makes packaging operations smoother and helps keep goods safe during long-distance shipping.

• Verify Environmental Standards: Always ask suppliers for test reports that confirm compliance with regulations like REACH and RoHS.
• Focus on Manufacturing Capability: Work, with manufacturers that use automated coating lines and follow strict quality control measures.
