Why Does Packing Tape Dry Out and Turn Yellow in Storage?

In order to avoid peeling off, BOPP packing tape has to know the structure. Normal sealing tape is made of a BOPP film backing coated with a pressure sensitive adhesive (PSA) layer, usually a water-based acrylic emulsion.

• Low Ambient Temperatures (< 5°C / 41°F) Low temperature causes the glass transition temperature of the pressure-sensitive adhesive. The glue hardens, so there is poor initial adhesion. Multiple freeze-thaw cycles severely impair long-term bonding performance.

3. Oxygen Degradation and High Humidity

1. Temperature and Humidity Control

• The Storage Temperature should be 15°C to 25°C (59°F to 77°F). Avoid exposure to temperatures above 30°C (86°F) or below 5°C (41°F).
• Optimal Relative Humidity is 40% to 60% RH. Keep stock out of top-tier racks beneath unventilated metal roofing (summer temperatures reach 50°C / 122°F) and low, wet floors.

2. UV Protection and Shading

Tape cartons should be stored away&tape cartons from direct sunlight, open loadingbays, and skylights. High-UV halogen or fluorescent fixtures may be replaced with low-heat LED pallet warehouse lighting. Master Cartons should be kept sealed until the tape is needed for use.

3. Pallet Stacking and Placement Rules

• Roll Orientation: Keep rolls flat on their sides (roll core is on bottom or top, perpendicular to the floor). Do not store individual rolls vertically on their ends, as the weight can compress roll sides and force adhesive to ooze.
• Stacking Heights: Stacking of master cartons is limited to 5 layers (or 1.5m height). Leave cartons on pallets at least 10 cm away from concrete floors to prevent moisture from the ground wicking up.

4. Strict FIFO (First-In, First-Out) Inventory Control

Tag each pallet that comes in with clear dates. Implement the FIFO (First In, First Out) stock rotation to send the older stock first and to avoid the old stock being piled up in the corners of the warehouse.

5. Temperature Acclimatization Before Use

If the tape has been refrigerated, do not place it directly on a high speed automatic sealing line. Let the tape stand in a room temperature environment (~20°C / 68°F) for at least 24 hours. It also renews complete viscoelasticity and avoids debonding due to false adhesion.
