In the fields of industrial\u2002packaging and bulk buying, BOPP packing tape (BOPP carton sealing tape) is considered to be the roof and corner consumable. But procurement directors and warehouse managers are too often faced with an expensive problem: the tape for packing bought in bulk, after\u2002being stored for 6 or 12 months in a warehouse, turns yellow, loses its stickiness, or has dried up altogether. It\u2002snaps easily, comes off or leaves a powdered residue on carton walls when wet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This “premature aging” leads to direct material waste, higher purchasing costs, and risk of carton popping or freight damage during transit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Understanding why packing tape dries out, turns yellow, and fails in storage\u2014and implementing proactive warehouse controls\u2014is critical to protecting inventory and maintaining supply chain reliability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why Does Packing Tape Dry Out and Turn Yellow in Storage?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In order to avoid peeling off, BOPP packing tape has to know the structure. Normal sealing tape is made of a BOPP film backing coated with a pressure sensitive adhesive (PSA)\u2002layer, usually a water-based acrylic emulsion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Adhesive decay and yellowing during storage in warehouses are rnediated by the following ent environmental and physical mechanisrns:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. UV Radiation and Light Exposure<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

UV Radiation and Light ExposureUltraviolet (UV) light is the\u2002major factor for degradation of adhesive polymers. Prolonged exposure of a product to the\u2002sun (or high-UV warehouse lighting) results in photo-oxidation of the acrylic polymer chains. The cross-linked adhesive nature is degraded, leading to (yellow or brown) discoloration of the\u2002adhesive layer as it becomes more stiff and loses its initial tack. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. High Temperatures and Thermal Oxidation<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

  • High Ambient Temperatures (> 35\u00b0C \/ 95\u00b0F) Heat promotes evaporation of solvent\/water from the adhesive matrix, leading to thermal oxidation in which the polymer is deprived of its viscoelasticity and becomes brittle.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Low Ambient Temperatures (< 5\u00b0C \/ 41\u00b0F) Low temperature causes the glass transition temperature of the pressure-sensitive\u2002adhesive. The glue hardens, so\u2002there is poor initial adhesion. Multiple freeze-thaw cycles severely impair long-term bonding\u2002performance.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    3. Oxygen Degradation and High Humidity<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

    Oxygen degradation and high humidity Atmospheric oxygen slowly oxidizes active groups in the functional layers of the adhesive, reducing its bonding capability. High relative humidity (RH > 80%) cause a paper core to become soft, changing roll tension and promoting\u2002edge oozing as well. Extruded adhesive reacts more quickly with air at the ambient temperature, hence drying from the periphery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    4. Excessive Stacking and Compression<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

    Too much stacking and compression Heavy pallets stacked too high on top\u2002of one another cause uneven internal tension across the roll, resulting in adhesive migration and edge squeeze. The exposed glue\u2002soon becomes dry, what make the roll hard to unwind or cause teared failures at application.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Selecting Long Shelf-Life Packaging Tape<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Much of the\u2002service life of a packaging tape is decided in the production process. Low-quality, inferior tapes with unmodified adhesives tend to last\u2002for 3 to 6 months, while the quality industrial BOPP tapes can be used without any problem for 18 to 24 months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
